Tomar2 Relies on Scale, Content and Material

Stephen Tomar Furniture and Tomar2, the newest line of furniture to be introduced in the Fall of 2007, from designers Stephen Tomar and Stuart Lampert, are a constantly evolving process where fresh and innovative designs are designed regularly for its legions of followers of their classically inspired pieces.  Both Tomar and Lampert firmly believe that, “the great furniture makers from the mid twentieth century prove iconic design can influence and intrigue and where adornments and embellishments so prevalent in other periods are neither necessary nor warranted. Scale, content and materials take precedent in an understated simplicity.”  The duo acted on their beliefs and created furniture that have a certain rhythm and motion all their own, at once shapely and fluid, easily introduced to contemporary environments that are light filled and airy with walls of glass as well as in places that are more classic or transitional in nature.

Their new collection, Tomar2, was inspired by the world’s oceans.  The movement of the water, the strength of waves hitting the rocks as well as the calmness and tranquility that these majestic bodies of water allow, gave both designers an idea that blossomed into Tomar2.  Stephen Tomar and Stuart Lampert both agree that they created the Stephen Tomar Furniture line in the late 1990’s because they couldn’t find any contemporary furniture that was paired down, modern and beautiful.  They had a very hard time finding a modern game chair that wasn’t fully upholstered or didn’t look like a dining chair.  Instead, everything that they found was heavy looking or had a lot of flourishes, which has never been their aesthetic.   With both lines of furniture, Stephen Tomar notes that their furniture will last through many homes and evolutions of change.  “A room that lives is what I strive for most of all.  Ultimately, it is too costly to let a room become stagnant because the owner doesn’t like the way it feels. If that is the case I failed in my mission.”
